The 3 Types of Freedom: Time, Financial, and Location (Which One Do You Really Want?)
Every week, I share practical frameworks to help you Escape the Script—so you can stop living by default and start designing a life on your own terms.
This isn’t feel-good inspiration. It’s strategic content for people who are done playing small, tired of the 9-to-5 autopilot, and ready to build a freedom-centered life through bold moves, identity upgrades, and intentional action.
Join thousands of readers who are breaking out of the loop, building systems for freedom, and rewriting the story they were handed. It's time to exit survival mode and take control of your future—one unscripted decision at a time.
I thought I had freedom figured out.
My business was generating $15,000 monthly in passive income. I could work from anywhere with WiFi. By every metric, I had "made it."
Yet I felt more trapped than when I had a 9-to-5.
I was working 70-hour weeks, constantly stressed about revenue dips, and couldn't take a real vacation without my income collapsing.
I had built financial and location freedom but completely destroyed my time freedom in the process.
That's when I learned something that changed everything:
Freedom isn't one thing. It's three distinct types, and the order you pursue them determines whether you achieve sustainable liberation or just create more sophisticated forms of captivity.
Here are the 3 types of freedom most people confuse:
Time Freedom: You control your schedule, energy, and daily choices. You can say no to requests that don't align with your priorities and yes to opportunities that matter.
Financial Freedom: Your money works harder than you do. You have enough assets or passive income that work becomes optional rather than mandatory.
Location Freedom: Your income and lifestyle aren't tied to a specific place. You can live and work from anywhere that serves your goals.
Most people try to build all three simultaneously and achieve none effectively.
The sequence that actually works:
Phase 1: Time Freedom First I started by negotiating a 4-day work week at my corporate job. This gave me the mental space and energy to think strategically instead of just reacting to urgent demands.
Time freedom isn't about having infinite time—it's about having intentional control over the time you have.
Phase 2: Financial Freedom Second With my extra day, I built a newsletter and created online courses. The key was focusing on assets that generate income without my constant presence.
I learned the difference between being expensive (high hourly rate) and being financially free (income without hours).
Phase 3: Location Freedom Third Only after I had consistent asset-based income did I transition to full location independence. This was much easier when I wasn't stressed about money or scrambling for time.
Why this sequence works:
Time freedom gives you space to build financial systems. Financial freedom gives you options for how and where to spend your time. Location freedom opens up global opportunities for both.
When you try to build them in the wrong order, they cannibalize each other.
Chase location freedom without financial stability? You'll stress about money in every new city.
Build financial freedom without time freedom? You'll burn out before your assets can compound.
The integration effect is powerful.
All three types eventually reinforce each other. Time freedom enables better financial decisions. Financial freedom creates more time options. Location freedom multiplies both time and financial opportunities.
But it takes strategic patience to build them in the right sequence.
Here's what I wish someone had told me earlier:
You can't optimize for all types of freedom at once, especially in the beginning. Pick the one you want most right now and focus there until you see consistent progress.
Most people score themselves on all three areas and try to improve everything simultaneously. This scattered approach delivers none of them effectively.
My challenge to you:
Rate yourself on each type of freedom from 1-10. Choose the lowest score or the one that feels most urgent. Design one specific experiment you can run this month to improve that area by just 10%.
Focus on that single domain before adding the others.
Sequential freedom beats scattered effort every time.
